Diabetes: Alzheimer S And Diabetes Could Be Linked Diseases Ii

The group of researchers from Brown University Medical School analyzed, in the frontal part of the brain, one of the major area affected by Alzheimer s, insulin and insulin receptor function. The team discovered that the levels of insulin receptors and the brain s ability to respond to insulin decreased as the severity of Alzheimer s increased. According to the experts, insulin receptors were nearly 80 percent lower than in a normal brain in the most advanced stage of Alzheimer s. Two abnormal situations related to insulin in Alzheimer s were also found by researchers. The first abnormal situation was that as the disease progressed, levels of insulin dropped. In relation to the second one, experts explained that insulin and its related protein, insulin-related growth factor-I, lose the ability to bind to cell receptors, which creates a resistance to the insulin growth factors, causing the cells to malfunction and die. For the neuropathologist at Rhode Island Hospital and professor of pathology at Brown University Medical School...

Are Herbal Diet Pills Right For You?

I took a few herbal diet pills in college once on a whim, and I didn t eat anything for nearly two days afterwards. I also didn t really get much sleep either. Anything that makes you wired like that and kills your appetite so completely just isn t good for you. While they were ephedra free and were supposedly totally natural and safe, I don t think I d ever felt so polluted and ill in my life. A year later I discovered that the FDA had banned the same herbal diet pills I had taken, and I have to wonder what it was I had put in my body. Herbal diet pills are very popular these days as an alternative to more traditional methods of weight loss like diet and exercise. Herbal treatments in general are very trendy today, which I find a little worrisome for several reasons. First of all, just about anything can be in an herbal diet pill. Herbs are a kind of loophole in the FDA system, as they are not classified as drugs and therefore don t have the rigorous standards for testing and safety that drugs normally get. Make no mistake about...

Keeping Termites From Spreading After Hurricanes

04.30.10

When Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ravaged the Gulf Coast, they left behind a line of debris some 500 miles long. The waste disposal continues to be a complicated issue due to termites, which have always caused problems for homeowners in the Gulf states, as well as for homeowners throughout the United States. Accidentally imported to New Orleans in the 1940s by warships returning from Asia, the termite is such a serious problem that the downed trees, branches, stumps and other waste have forced Louisiana to issue quarantines in several parishes, forbidding debris removal from infected areas. Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry Bob Odom encourages homeowners to prevent future termite infestations: Now is the opportune time to evaluate your situation and take the necessary precautions to protect your home. It would be a double disaster to have lost your home to a hurricane, rebuild, and then lose it to Formosan termites a few years later. With termite damage estimated to cost U.S. homeowners more than 1.5 billion a...

Blade Versus Bladeless Lasik Eye Surgery: What Is The Difference?

To a layman, such terms might appear overwhelming. However, as a patient you must know the difference between the two surgery types, and the rewards and risks associated with each. Traditional LASIK makes use of a microkeratome to cut a thin hinged flap in the cornea. The flap is then folded back to reveal the stroma the middle layer of the cornea. A high precision laser, called the excimer laser, is used to reshape the corneal surface so as to correct any refractive error. The flap is then repositioned to act as a natural bandage. Since the microkeratome used to create a flap is in fact a surgical blade, the procedure is also known as blade LASIK. A more recent innovation, introduced in 1999, makes use of a high energy laser IntraLase or femtosecond laser to create a flap during surgery. As opposed to traditional LASIK, IntraLase does not employ a surgical blade, and hence the procedure is often marketed as bladeless or all laser LASIK. The term itself has raged a debate among eye surgeons, as to whether it should be used in...

Being The Mountain

As I hiked up the path to the Peaceful Valley Chapel, I relished the quiet of my early morning solitude. After many years as a participant and assistant instructor at Thomas Crum s Journey To Center Program, this beautiful and energizing ten-minute hike had become a personal ritual. Each morning of each Journey to Center week, before our breathing and meditation session at 7, I always hike to the top of this small mountain to be inspired by the view of a much higher mountain range in the distance. I stare at the 14,000-foot peaks, open my arms and breathe, inviting their energy, power, beauty and peace into my being. I contrast their stability and their just there-ness with my own approval-seeking energy, their effortless poise with my striving to do the right thing, and their natural and graceful essence with my desire to appear knowledgeable and beautiful and centered. Like the mountain. That turned out to be my practice this year - and I let the mountain be my teacher. Each time well, most times that I found myself in striving...
